Counterfeits, bootlegs, and brand protection

Popular anime properties attract counterfeit and bootleg products, and those fakes compete directly with licensed goods. Licensors usually lead enforcement, but licensees play an important role in spotting problems and protecting their own products.

Counterfeits copy official products or logos outright, while bootlegs are unauthorized designs using the characters. Both show up on marketplaces, social media shops, and at conventions. Your contract may require you to report infringements you notice, and it usually reserves the right to take legal action to the licensor. Don't send takedown notices or cease-and-desist letters on your own unless your agreement allows it.

Practical steps that help:

  • Use official hologram stickers, licensing marks, or tags if the licensor provides them.
  • Keep clear records of your approved designs so fakes are easier to prove.
  • Monitor major marketplaces for your product lines and share findings with the licensor.
  • Tell customers how to spot official goods and where to buy them.

If fakes are hurting your sales badly, raise it with the licensor early. They may have enforcement programs or preferred brand-protection vendors. For anything beyond reporting, consult a licensing attorney.
