The Licensing Process, Step by Step

5.6

Production, launch, and marketing requirements

Once products are approved, your contract still shapes how you manufacture, launch, and promote them. Knowing these requirements in advance helps you avoid delays and stay in good standing with the licensor.

Common production requirements include using approved factories, meeting quality and product safety standards for your market, and applying the correct copyright notice (for example, "©Author/Publisher, Committee Name") exactly as the licensor specifies. Some licensors require official hologram stickers or authenticity labels, factory audits, or advance notice of production quantities.

Your contract may also set a launch date, sometimes called a "first ship" or "on-shelf" date, by which products must be on sale. Missing it can be a breach. Many licenses include marketing commitments, such as spending a set amount or percentage on promotion, and require approval of ads, press releases, and social media content. You may also need to provide free samples to the licensor for their records.

Build these steps into your timeline from the start, and ask the licensor early if anything is unclear. Product safety and regional compliance rules vary, so check with a compliance specialist where needed.
