Live and location-based: events, pop-ups, cafés, exhibitions
Live and location-based licenses let you create physical experiences around an anime property: pop-up shops, themed cafés, exhibitions, screenings, and fan events. These deals combine space, timing, merchandise, and food, so they touch many kinds of rights at once.
In Japan, collaboration cafés (コラボカフェ, korabo kafe) and pop-up stores are a familiar part of anime fandom, and the format has spread internationally. A typical location-based license covers use of artwork for décor and signage, themed menus, event-exclusive merchandise, and sometimes screenings or character appearances.
Key points to plan for:
- Multiple rights in one deal. Décor, food, merchandise, video, and music may each need separate permission.
- Dates and venues. The license usually names specific locations and run dates.
- Exclusive goods. Event-only merchandise is popular but needs approvals and careful quantity planning.
- Fan experience. Licensors care about crowd management, ticketing fairness, and quality, since a bad event reflects on the property.
- Local rules. Food safety, permits, and venue insurance are your responsibility.
Fees are often a flat fee, a royalty on merchandise and food sales, or both. Start planning early; approvals for large events can take months.
