Evergreen vs. seasonal titles
Some anime titles sell for decades; others peak for one broadcast season and fade. Knowing which kind you are licensing affects your product plan, your minimum guarantee, and how long a term you should ask for.
Japanese TV anime is scheduled in three-month seasons, often called a cour (クール / kūru), starting around January, April, July, and October. A seasonal title is a new show whose buzz is concentrated around its airing. It can bring huge short-term demand, but approvals and production lead times mean your products may arrive after the peak. An evergreen title is a long-running or classic franchise with steady demand, repeat seasons, films, and multiple generations of fans. Evergreens tend to be more predictable but are often more expensive and more crowded with existing licensees.
A few practical questions help you decide:
- Is a second season, film, or sequel announced?
- Is the source manga still running and selling?
- How long will approvals and manufacturing take compared with the airing window?
- Can your product survive if interest drops after the season ends?
Many licensees balance their portfolio with one or two evergreens for steady sales and a carefully chosen seasonal title for upside.
