Trends to watch
The anime licensing market keeps changing as audiences, platforms, and formats evolve. These trends are worth watching, though how strongly each applies will vary by title and territory.
- Simultaneous global launches. More titles are planned for international audiences from day one, so licensing windows abroad increasingly overlap with Japan.
- Brand collaborations beyond fandom. Fashion, beauty, food, and sports brands are using anime characters to reach broad audiences, not only core fans.
- Location-based experiences. Pop-up stores, themed cafés, and exhibitions continue to spread outside Japan.
- Games as franchise drivers. Mobile and console games can extend a title's life and sometimes create original IP that later becomes anime.
- Direct-to-fan channels. Official online stores and pre-order models let rights holders and licensees gauge demand before producing.
- Brand protection. Rights holders are investing more in fighting counterfeits and piracy, and they expect licensees to support that work (see 7.2).
- Sustainability and compliance. Retailers and regulators in many regions are paying closer attention to materials, packaging, and product safety.
Treat trends as prompts for research, not as guarantees. The best signal is still how a specific title performs with your specific customers.
