Fandom insights: what fans buy and why

Anime fans often buy to express attachment to a specific character, not just to a show. Products that respect the source material, feature official artwork, and feel collectible usually outperform generic logo merchandise.

A key idea is oshi (推し), meaning a fan's favorite character or "the one I support." Oshi-katsu (推し活), or "fan activity," covers the ways fans show that support, including buying goods featuring their favorite. This is why character-by-character product lines, blind boxes, acrylic stands, and badges are so common: fans want their character, and sometimes the whole set.

Other patterns worth knowing:

  • Authenticity matters. Fans notice off-model art, wrong colors, and out-of-character poses. Newly drawn official artwork (描き下ろし / kakioroshi) is especially valued.
  • Limited editions drive urgency. Event-exclusive and time-limited items often sell quickly.
  • Everyday items can work too. Well-designed apparel and accessories let fans show their fandom in a subtler way.
  • Experiences count. Cafés, pop-ups, and exhibitions give fans a place to gather, and the goods sold there become souvenirs.
